Manufacturer Spotlight: Dell PowerEdge R640
Not every workload needs the newest silicon on the market — and the Dell PowerEdge R640 is proof of that. A couple of generations back from Dell’s current lineup, it’s still one of the most reliable, cost-effective 1U servers we source. Here’s a real configuration we built and sold last summer.
What It Is
The PowerEdge R640 is a 1U, 2-socket rack server built on Intel Xeon Scalable processors. It’s a dense, general-purpose workhorse — well suited to virtualization hosts, storage-heavy workloads, and other steady, always-on infrastructure that doesn’t need bleeding-edge core counts or the latest PCIe generation to get the job done.
A Recent Build
This configuration leans into storage density, pairing dual 18-core processors with a full set of 3.84TB SAS drives — a strong fit for virtualization hosts or file/storage servers that need both compute headroom and significant onboard capacity:
| Component | Part Number | Qty |
|---|---|---|
| Dell PowerEdge R640 Server Base | — | 1 |
| Intel Xeon Gold 6154 (18-core, 3.0GHz) | SR3J5 | 2 |
| Heatsink, 120W+ CPU, R640 | Y8MC1 | 2 |
| 64GB PC4-21300VL DDR4-2666 4Rx4 ECC RDIMM | 4JMGM | 4 |
| PERC H730 Mini/Mono 12G RAID w/2GB NV Cache | 7H4CN | 1 |
| Intel I350 Quad-Port 1GbE Rack Network Daughter Card | R1XFC | 1 |
| Rail Kit, 1U Ready, R640 | K1X36 | 1 |
| Bezel Assembly, 4/8-Bay, R640 | Y86B2 | 1 |
| 3.84TB 12G SAS RI, 2.5″ | M09K5 | 8 |
| 750W Power Supply, R640 | PJMDN | 2 |
With 256GB of total memory (4x 64GB DIMMs) and 30.72TB of raw SAS capacity across eight drives, this build is geared toward workloads that need both compute and storage in one chassis — think a consolidated virtualization host, a file server, or a VM datastore with room to grow.
Why the R640 Still Holds Up
Dual 18-core Xeon Scalable processors, a redundant dual power supply setup, and support for high-capacity SAS drives make the R640 more than capable for demanding infrastructure roles — all at a fraction of what a current-generation platform costs. It’s a great example of where refurbished, previous-generation hardware makes more sense than paying a premium for headroom you may never use.
